Day 1 - Porto to Cabo do Mundo - 18.5km

Today was meant to be an easy start with a shorter walk, but anyone who has read a camino blog before will know the guide book distance and the actual distance are "a little" off.

Tina's flight landed in porto prompt at 12 and passport and bags cleared, an uber to Cathedral Se de Porto was ordered at 1. Unfortunately the pilgrim office closes from 12 til 3 so we joined the long line to the cathedral to get camino passports and shells. At 2pm we finally set out as pilgrims. 248km on the marker but our chosen routes brings that up to around 275km to santiago.

The route winds down narrow porto streets from the cathedral until you hit the douro river.

Its labour day bank holiday here so its full of vibrancy - and people!!

5km following the road and tramlines along the douro river and we join the atlantic, turning right (north) and following the coast.

We of course attracted the village idiot, a beggar all the way from the states who gave us a good 20 minutes of company, whether we wanted it or not. Its always nice to be reminded about the land of the free and how they are they bring liberty and freedom to us all - whether we want it or not. We are pilgrims now - hence polite and didnt tell him to f off. Im proud of us!!

We stopped in matasinhos for freshly bbqd sardines chips and a beer, before hitting the wooden walkways more famous of the portuguese camino de costa. Pleasant walks along the ocean saw us arrive at cabo do mundo. We will stay here again in 18 days on the way home and the host is letting us leave some stuff. Heavy packs we do not need.

To which end we best finish this bottle of red i carried the whole day. Im not carrying it again tomorrow!
